Book Reflection #7
Want a Smarter Kickstarter Launch? Study the Campaigns That Came Before You
One of the most practical—and frankly underrated—insights from Your First Kickstarter Campaign is this: if you want to build a successful crowdfunding campaign, study the ones that already worked (or didn’t).
The book recommends analyzing 5 to 10 campaigns similar to yours. At first glance, that might sound like basic research—but it’s actually a high-leverage activity. Tools and platforms can show you metrics, sure. But only a conversation with the campaign creator will tell you why something worked or didn’t (Stanislovaitis, 2019).
Ask yourself:
- What were their biggest challenges?
- What surprised them?
- How did they attract early backers?
- What would they do differently?
You won’t find those answers on Google Analytics.
And here’s the mindset shift I appreciated most: these creators are not your competition. In fact, they’re your potential mentors. Worst case, they ignore your message. Best case? You get firsthand advice that could save you months of trial and error.
If you’re unsure how to reach out—or if you’re being ghosted—Dr. Luke Hobson has a helpful guide on how to follow up and keep communication alive with experts. His tips are relevant even outside education and apply directly to Kickstarter creators and entrepreneurial outreach (Hobson, 2024).
Also, timing matters. Were those successful projects launched during a surge of media attention? Were there cultural or seasonal trends at play? Understanding context is just as important as understanding content. News cycles, product categories, or even the time of year can amplify or hinder your campaign’s momentum.
Bottom line: learning from those who’ve done it before is the shortcut most people ignore. If you’re planning a Kickstarter campaign, this kind of human-centered research might be your most valuable step yet (Stanislovaitis, 2019).
