Book Reflection #6
The Secret to a Successful Launch? It Starts Long Before You Go Live
If there’s one thing I’ve taken from this part of Your First Kickstarter Campaign, it’s this: your launch is only as strong as your preparation. And for many creators, pre-launch is the make-or-break moment.
A lot of first-time campaigners think success comes from going viral or having a slick video. But the truth? Kickstarter campaigns can take months—even up to a year—to properly prepare, depending on how far along your idea is, how much funding you need, and what resources you have. The book makes it clear: most projects fail because creators underestimate the pre-launch (Stanislovaitis, 2019).
The pre-launch isn’t just about hype. It’s about building a committed group of early backers who will pledge as soon as your campaign goes live. That initial traction is vital. According to Kickstarter’s own data, 78% of projects that hit just 20% of their goal within the first two days end up succeeding. That’s how powerful early momentum can be.
One detail I hadn’t fully considered before was how critical the first five days are. That’s when the algorithm kicks in. Get enough backers early on, and Kickstarter will elevate your project in its search rankings, giving you visibility far beyond your personal network (Stanislovaitis, 2019).
But that means your budget has to be airtight—long before launch. You can’t just guess your funding goal. You need to understand every cost involved: prototypes, production, design, packaging, shipping, platform and payment fees. Kickstarter has a great resource on project budgeting to help creators get this right (Kickstarter Support, 2024).
Here’s my biggest takeaway: your campaign’s first week is determined by the months that come before it.
Ask yourself:
- Have I built a list of potential early backers?
- Do I know my real production costs?
- Have I accounted for fees and logistics?
A solid pre-launch strategy isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. What are you doing now to prepare for your future launch?
