Give Them Something to Talk About: Why a Press Kit Matters More Than You Think

This section opened my eyes to a part of campaign planning that most early creators overlook—being ready for media interest. It’s one thing to hope for publicity, but it’s another to be prepared when it actually knocks.

A press kit, also known as a media kit, is essentially your brand’s professional introduction to the public eye. It’s what journalists, bloggers, influencers, or even podcasters will look for if they’re considering sharing your story. It doesn’t have to be complex, but it does need to be intentional. At a minimum, it should include a high-resolution product photo and a press release that clearly summarizes your product and story in 400–500 words. But more importantly, it should feel cohesive, aligned with your tone, and easy to digest quickly (Stanislovaitis, 2019).

According to Indeed’s guide, what makes a great media kit is clarity, accessibility, and visual appeal. You’re not just sending files—you’re equipping someone to represent your project well (Indeed Editorial Team, 2025).

Here’s where I see the real value: creating a media kit forces you to refine your narrative. It helps you figure out how to talk about your idea in a concise, engaging way—and that clarity pays off far beyond media outreach. You’ll use this same language in your campaign description, pitch video, and email updates.

It also increases your project’s legitimacy. A well-made media kit tells the world (and the press) that you’re serious, prepared, and professional—qualities that naturally build trust with potential backers and collaborators (Stanislovaitis, 2019).

Bottom line? Don’t wait until you’ve “gone viral” to start thinking about this. If your idea is compelling enough to get covered, make sure you’re ready for the spotlight when it shows up.
